Cross-device resume: continue Android app tasks on your PC
Microsoft introduced a Cross-Device Resume feature for Windows 11 that lets users continue certain activities from an Android phone directly on a Windows PC. If you were listening to music, working on a document, or browsing on your phone, Windows can surface that activity on the Taskbar so you can pick up where you left off.
Users can resume tasks such as Spotify playback, continue work in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, or restart a browsing session. The feature works through Microsoft’s Phone Link on Windows and the Link to Windows app on Android. It can be enabled from Taskbar settings, so users can decide whether they want these suggested “resume” actions to appear.
For everyday users, the benefit is convenience. Many people switch between phone and laptop multiple times a day for work, study, and communication. Cross-device resume reduces friction by cutting down steps like searching for the same file or reopening the same page. Adoption will depend on reliability and how smoothly it works across common apps.
Windows MIDI Services: stronger support for creators and developers
Microsoft also introduced major improvements to Windows MIDI Services, expanding support for both MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0. This update matters most to musicians, audio producers, and developers who rely on MIDI devices and software workflows.
New capabilities include shared MIDI ports across applications, custom port naming, loopback functionality, and app-to-app MIDI communication. Shared ports can reduce conflicts where only one application could access a device. Custom naming makes it easier to identify hardware in studios with multiple controllers. Loopback and app-to-app routing can support flexible production and testing workflows.
For creators, these changes can reduce troubleshooting time and make Windows a more dependable platform for music work, especially when multiple apps and devices are used in the same setup.
Network speed test, device info card, and WebP wallpaper support
Windows 11 now includes a built-in network speed test that users can access from the Taskbar or Quick Settings. The tool opens a Bing web page to measure internet speed, which can help users confirm whether slow performance is linked to the connection.
Microsoft has also added a Device Info card to the Settings Home page. It displays key hardware specifications such as processor, memory, graphics, and storage, and provides quick access to the “About” page for more detailed hardware information. Security and admin tools: external Windows Hello sensors and Sysmon
Microsoft expanded Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security to support external fingerprint readers. Previously, the enhanced mode worked mainly with built-in biometric sensors. Now, users can configure compatible external fingerprint devices from the Sign-in options page in Settings.
Windows 11 also includes Sysmon (System Monitor) as a native feature. Sysmon is used by system administrators to monitor system activity and enhance logging. Microsoft says it can be installed directly from the Optional Features section in Settings. Most regular users may never use Sysmon, but for IT teams it can improve visibility during troubleshooting and security investigations.
Quick Machine Recovery and camera controls: stability-focused upgrades
Microsoft expanded Quick Machine Recovery to Windows 11 Pro devices. The feature was previously enabled by default mainly on Home edition devices, and it helps systems recover automatically from certain startup issues. For professionals and small businesses, recovery tools reduce downtime and can speed up return-to-work when boot problems happen.
Microsoft also added new pan and tilt controls in the camera settings page, giving users more control over supported webcams. This is useful for meetings and recordings where framing matters.
