Why WhatsApp Is Moving Away From Tenor
WhatsApp is preparing to phase out Tenor as one of its built-in GIF providers after changes spotted in a recent iOS beta update. According to testing information shared from WhatsApp beta version 26.2.10.70, available through Apple’s TestFlight program, the messaging app is working on integrating Klipy as a new default source for GIFs.
This shift is directly linked to Tenor’s decision to shut down its API services on 30 June 2026. Tenor has already stopped accepting new developer registrations, which means apps that rely on its GIF search and delivery features must now look for alternatives. To avoid a sudden break in GIF sharing inside chats, WhatsApp is proactively building support for Klipy before Tenor goes offline.
Klipy GIF Integration Inside WhatsApp
Klipy is a content platform that offers a wide library of GIFs, memes, and stickers, along with an official API for developers. By connecting to this API, apps like WhatsApp can allow users to search, preview, and share animated content without leaving the chat window. In practice, this means that the basic experience of tapping the GIF icon, searching for a reaction, and sending it to friends will continue as normal.
WhatsApp plans to automatically migrate users who currently depend on Tenor across to Klipy, without requiring any manual action or additional settings. Once the switch is completed, GIFs pulled from Klipy will carry a small Klipy label inside the app so that users can see which provider is powering the search results. The change will roll out in a future app update after testing is complete.
What Will Change for WhatsApp Users
Right now, WhatsApp offers GIF search through both Tenor and Giphy. Depending on a user’s country, app build, and account configuration, some people see Tenor as their main source while others rely on Giphy by default. When Tenor’s API finally goes offline, WhatsApp will quietly redirect users who were using Tenor to Klipy instead.
If your account is already configured to use Giphy, you will not notice any major change from this update. The GIF panel will continue to draw results from Giphy as before. For users who move from Tenor to Klipy, the visual style and selection of GIFs might look slightly different, but the overall flow of searching and sending GIFs will remain familiar. There is no need to back up old GIFs or change any privacy settings because of the switch.
Other Apps Also Preparing for Tenor’s Shutdown
WhatsApp is not the only platform responding to Tenor’s planned API shutdown. Other services that previously integrated Tenor, including popular communication apps like Discord, have also started testing or adopting Klipy as a replacement. This suggests that Klipy may quickly become one of the main alternatives in the GIF provider market once Tenor exits the space.
Although WhatsApp has not announced a public release date for the update, the migration is expected to be finished before 1 July 2026 to keep GIF sharing smooth for users worldwide. For most people, the change will happen quietly in the background.
