US Pauses Immigration Applications from 19 Countries Over Security Concerns

The Trump administration has halted green card and citizenship applications from 19 non-European countries, citing national security concerns and expanding earlier travel restrictions.

New Pause on Immigration Cases from 19 Countries

The Trump administration has announced that it is suspending all immigration applications from citizens of 19 non-European countries, sharply expanding earlier restrictions on travel and entry. The move covers green card petitions, US citizenship cases and other immigration benefits, and applies to people who are already in the system as well as those planning to file new applications.

Officials say the decision is based on national security and public safety concerns and builds on a partial travel ban first introduced in June. While earlier rules mainly targeted entry into the United States, the latest step goes further by freezing the processing of many legal immigration files tied to the listed countries.

Which Countries Are Affected by the Suspension

The pause affects applicants from Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. These countries were already facing some of the strictest limits earlier this year, including near-total suspensions on entry for many categories of travellers.

The latest action also covers Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, which had previously been under partial restrictions. Together, the list includes states across Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean and Asia, many of which have long struggled with conflict, political instability or strained ties with Washington.

Pakistan is not on the list, but the decision may still be closely watched in the wider region, especially by families with relatives in the affected countries or by employers and universities that rely on cross-border mobility.

Policy Linked to Recent Attack and Security Review

The administration connected the new suspension to last week’s attack on US National Guard members in Washington, where an Afghan man was arrested as a suspect. One Guardsman was killed and another critically injured in the incident, which quickly entered the wider political debate over immigration and security.

A memorandum outlining the policy cites several recent crimes allegedly involving immigrants and says all applicants from the 19 countries must go through a fresh security review. In practice, this could mean new interviews, additional background checks and longer processing times for people whose cases were already in progress.

Impact on Green Card and Citizenship Applicants

By extending restrictions from entry bans to immigration processing, the policy directly affects people who are in the middle of life-changing decisions. Applicants from the listed countries now face uncertainty about when, or even whether, their files will move forward.

The suspension covers family-based petitions, employment routes, diversity visa cases and naturalisation applications for US citizenship. For many families, this will mean prolonged separation or the need to reconsider long-term plans that depended on moving, studying or working in the United States.

Immigration lawyers expect more backlogs and legal challenges. They say applicants should keep copies of all documents, monitor official announcements and seek qualified legal advice before making major decisions such as travel or job changes.

Part of a Broader Shift in US Immigration Policy

The move comes as former President Donald Trump has intensified immigration enforcement since returning to office in January. His administration has deployed more federal agents to major cities, tightened controls at the US–Mexico border and blocked many asylum seekers from entering the country.

Until now, most of the focus had been on deportations and border measures rather than on legal immigration. The new suspension shows that the administration is ready to use its powers over the legal system as well, not only to manage illegal crossings.

For Pakistani observers, the decision is a reminder that US immigration rules can change quickly after political shifts in Washington. Students, professionals and families who are considering long-term plans abroad are often advised to diversify their options, look at multiple destinations and stay updated on policy changes that can affect travel, study and work routes.
