Submarine Cable Cut Causes Disruptions

The Pakistani internet users are also having reduced speeds due to the break of an international submarine cable in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Federal Minister of Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, affirmed that two important systems, the SMW4 and IMEWE cables, have been affected by the disruption, which has disrupted their connectivity. These systems constitute the backbone of international internet traffic in Pakistan.

Business and Connectivity Implications

This slow rate has not only affected individual users but also businesses that rely on fast internet to conduct their operations. In the digital services sphere for online shops, industries in Pakistan are experiencing shocks. Domestic infrastructure continues to operate, but the lack of international bandwidth has lowered the quality of the internet. This has caused concern among IT companies, freelancers, and exporters who rely on the smooth operation of their online businesses.

Analysts warn that long-term disruption may be detrimental to Pakistan’s digital economy. As more people rely on remote work, e-commerce, and digital marketing, constant connectivity is crucial for maintaining growth.

Government Response and Ongoing Efforts

The Pakistani minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja promised people that Pakistan has been communicating closely with the international bodies that fix the cable. There is, however, no definite time of restoration. She further noted that the shortage of broadband spectrum is also a long-term problem in Pakistan, which the government has been addressing with PTCL and other stakeholders.

The minister emphasized the government’s initiatives to increase bandwidth and diversify internet paths, aiming to provide resilience in the future. Negotiations are underway to expedite the spectrum allocation process and enhance domestic infrastructure.

Global Submarine Cable Network

The outage occurred on September 6 and has not yet been fully resolved. Submarine cables, such as SMW4 and IMEWE, play a crucial role in Pakistan’s international connectivity, with significant amounts of data passing through them. Any destruction of these cables usually causes extensive slowdowns until a backup mechanism can redistribute the traffic.

Submarine cables can be damaged anywhere around the world due to accidental cuts by anchors, natural calamities or technical problems. Experts in the industry have indicated that Pakistan will need to diversify its connectivity by investing in additional routes and partnerships to mitigate future risks.

Looking Ahead

Until further notice, it is advised that businesses and users in Pakistan continue to use it, as repairs are in progress. The incident highlights the need to invest in domestic broadband spectrum and other forms of connectivity. With such structural concerns resolved, Pakistan will be more resilient to future shocks and make the process of digital development less cumbersome.
