Season’s first snowfall has pulled temperatures below freezing in Quetta, Chaman and parts of northern Balochistan, with heavy snow and rain making conditions bitterly cold.
First Winter Snowfall Brings Sharp Drop in Temperatures
The first snowfall of the winter season has sent temperatures plunging across Quetta and several districts of northern Balochistan. What began as scattered showers in some areas has now turned into a widespread cold spell, with many localities reporting sub-zero temperatures and continuous snowfall.
According to reports, snow has been falling steadily in and around Chaman, a key border town, while surrounding regions are also seeing a mix of snow and rain. For many residents, the arrival of snow marks a welcome change after a long dry spell, but it has also brought serious challenges in the form of slippery roads, power disruptions and biting winds.
Chaman, Khojak Top and Toba Achakzai Hit Below Freezing
Weather observations show that Chaman has seen the mercury drop to around -1°C, making daily life noticeably tougher for people without proper heating or winter clothing. In higher altitude areas nearby, the cold is even more intense. Khojak Top and Khwaja Imran have both recorded temperatures near -3°C, while the Toba Achakzai range has gone down to about -4°C.
These sub-zero readings are typical for the region during strong winter systems, but they can still catch travelers and commuters off guard, especially when snowfall continues for several hours. Cold winds sweeping through open valleys and mountain passes add to the discomfort, making it difficult to stay outdoors for long periods without adequate protection.
For vulnerable groups like children, the elderly and low-income families, such temperatures pose real health risks. Without access to proper heating, warm clothing or medical support, cases of seasonal illnesses, including flu, pneumonia and other respiratory problems, tend to rise during such cold waves.
Significant Snow Accumulation Across Northern Balochistan
Snow accumulation in many areas has already become substantial. Initial estimates suggest that Toba Achakzai has received around 1.5 feet of snow, turning slopes and fields completely white. Khojak Top has recorded close to one foot of snow, while Chaman itself is believed to have received roughly ten inches.
In addition to these areas, snowfall and rain have been reported from Khojak Top, Khwaja Imran, Qila Abdullah, Gulistan, Jangal Pir Alizai, Shela Bagh and Mezai Adda. In Qila Saifullah and its adjoining localities, rainfall has intensified the chill, with weather officials expecting rain and snow to continue until evening.
Further east, Kan Mehtarzai and Muslim Bagh have seen intermittent snowfall, making roads wet, slushy and potentially dangerous for drivers. Authorities and local residents have warned that vehicles without proper tyres or chains may struggle to maintain grip on steep and curved sections.
Meanwhile, Mastung has recorded its first snowfall of the season, with the town quickly taking on a white blanket and temperatures dropping sharply. Rain in Kharan, Panjgur and neighbouring areas has also contributed to a colder start to winter across much of the province.
Impact on Daily Life and Advice for Residents
The combination of low temperatures, snowfall and rain is already affecting daily life across northern Balochistan. In some areas, local reports indicate disruptions to road traffic as smaller vehicles find it hard to navigate snow-covered or muddy routes. Delays in public transport and goods movement are likely where roads have not yet been fully cleared.
Cold weather also places added pressure on electricity and gas systems, as households increase their use of heaters and electric appliances. In localities where gas pressure is already low, residents often turn to wood or coal for heating, which can lead to indoor air pollution if rooms are not properly ventilated.
Health experts advise people to dress in multiple warm layers, cover their head, hands and feet when going outside, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snowfall or rain. Parents are encouraged to keep children indoors as much as possible, especially during early mornings and late evenings when the cold is at its peak.
As the cold wave continues, residents are also urged to follow updates from the Meteorological Department and local administration, particularly regarding road closures, weather warnings and school schedules. Staying informed and taking simple precautions can help families stay safer and more comfortable during this intense start to the winter season.
