Sindh Sets Up to Rs. 2 Million Fee for Fancy Vehicle Numbers

Sindh has fixed premium vehicle number plate fees at up to Rs. 2 million, introducing clear slabs for 786, 110 and other fancy registration numbers.

New Pricing Structure for Premium Number Plates

The Sindh government has approved a new pricing regime for so-called fancy or premium vehicle registration numbers, setting fees as high as Rs. 2 million for the most sought-after combinations. The move brings a formal structure to what has long been a high-demand area of vehicle registration, where unique or symbolic numbers often change hands at steep informal premiums.

According to a notification issued by the Excise and Taxation Department, vehicle owners across Sindh can now apply for preferred registration numbers by paying the prescribed fee. The policy applies to new registrations and is expected to create a transparent, rule-based mechanism for allocating special numbers instead of relying on personal contacts or unofficial channels.

Rs. 2 Million for Top-Tier Numbers like 786 and 110

Under the revised structure, the most coveted numbers have been placed in the top pricing tier. Special registration numbers such as 786 and 110 will now cost Rs. 2 million per plate. These combinations are traditionally considered highly valuable by many motorists due to religious, cultural or personal associations, and often become a visible status symbol on the road.

By officially pricing these numbers at the highest slab, the government is attempting to capture part of the premium that has historically existed in the grey market. It also signals that top-tier numbers will be allocated through a formal process, making it harder for unofficial “agents” to monetise their influence behind the scenes.

Excise officials expect strong demand for these high-end plates despite the steep fee, particularly from luxury vehicle owners and businesspeople who value distinctive registration numbers as part of their personal branding.

Fee Slabs for Three-Digit and Single-Digit Styled Series

Beyond the very top tier, the notification sets out a series of slabs for other attractive combinations. Three-digit numbers in the range of 111 to 999 have been fixed at Rs. 1 million per number. These include repeating digits and memorable sequences that are easier to recognise and remember.

Number plates between 100 and 900, as well as single-digit styled series from 001 to 009, have been priced at Rs. 0.5 million. These series often appeal to motorists who want a “clean” or low-number look without paying the very highest premium reserved for 786 or 110.

All other choice numbers that do not fall into the top slabs will be available at a base fee of Rs. 0.3 million. This ensures that even mid-tier fancy numbers are treated consistently, with a clear official price tag rather than ad hoc negotiation at registration counters.

Why Sindh Is Monetising Fancy Number Demand

The new framework is designed both to raise revenue and to regulate a segment of the market that has long operated informally. Demand for special registration numbers is not new in Sindh; car owners have for years sought “lucky” or symbolic plates, often paying quiet premiums to secure their preferred combinations.

By introducing an official fee schedule, the provincial government aims to channel that willingness to pay into the public exchequer instead of allowing private middlemen to profit. At the same time, a structured policy creates greater transparency: applicants know upfront what a certain number will cost and can apply under uniform rules.

Officials also argue that the policy puts a financial value on a scarce public resource. Since each registration number can only be issued once, premium pricing reflects the exclusivity that many motorists are actually seeking when they request customised plates.

What Vehicle Owners in Sindh Should Consider

For vehicle owners in Sindh, the new policy means that acquiring a fancy number plate will now involve a significant, clearly defined payment to the Excise and Taxation Department. Those interested in numbers like 786, 110 or other special combinations will need to weigh the prestige and personal satisfaction against the cost, which in some cases approaches the price of a small vehicle.

Motorists who do not wish to pay premium rates can still obtain standard registration numbers at regular fees, with no change to the usual process. The fancy number system is entirely optional and targeted at buyers who actively seek a specific combination.

As the new framework rolls out, the department is expected to publish detailed procedures for applying, payment methods and any conditions such as non-transferability or time limits. Until then, vehicle owners planning new purchases or transfers may wish to factor the revised fancy number fees into their overall budget if they are considering a premium plate.
