Excise extends the 9 August cutoff date for biometric verification of vehicles. The Sindh Excise and Taxation Department announced on Thursday the extension of the deadline for mandatory biometric verification of cars and motorcycles from 9 August to 14 August. Owners of motor vehicles all over Sindh, including Karachi, are advised to do so until the new deadline; otherwise, they will be liable to a penalty, and the transfer and registration process is reportedly expected to become more difficult from December.

Final Extension and Compliance Warnings

Deputy Director Asif Ali Bhatti has stated that this will be the last extension, indicating that no additional extension will be granted beyond the cutoff date of 14 August. The owner who is not on the registration documents must process the transfer and biometric verification as soon as possible. Thereafter, biometric verification would be compulsory for both buyers and sellers in all vehicle transfers.

State of Plates and Payment Of Collection For Motorcycle.

He said that over 5 million motorcycle owners in Sindh have not received their proper number plates, while some 6.5 to 7 million motorcycles are registered in the province. Only 1.6 million plates have been issued. The standard charges for a two-wheeler number plate are Rs 2,450.

The department states that plates are typically sent within a week, but it is common for citizens to receive them still not a month later. To facilitate this process, many distribution counters have been opened across Karachi, including in the Civic Centre, Executive Office Clifton, and Awami Markaz, and online applications are also accepted.

Better Service and Enhanced Security Mechanisms

With the mounting rush at registration centres, the department has proposed increasing the number of counters at the Civic Centre to serve the public better. The new-style number plates feature anti-fraud and tamper-resistant hologram, improved quality reflective material and make for easier visibility of the registration number at night via CCTV.

Bhatti also pointed out that the fight to dismantle the agent mafias continues; however, these networks keep resurfacing. Officials advise citizens to approach it through proper channels and to avoid using middlemen.
