SECP has warned investors against fake trading apps impersonating licensed brokers, urging the public to verify registrations and avoid unlicensed online platforms.

Fake Trading Apps Targeting Pakistani Investors

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan has issued a fresh warning to the public about a growing wave of fraudulent online trading platforms that are impersonating licensed brokers. These apps and websites often appear highly professional, run aggressive social media campaigns and make bold claims of guaranteed, risk-free profits to attract unsuspecting users.

The regulators indicate that complaints on such platforms have been rising with a significant number of investors complaining of their accounts being blocked abruptly, their balances disappearing and being denied to withdraw money. SECP has given the warning to the masses that any deal with high returns with zero risk or with no effort is a clear red flag and must be approached with a lot of caution.

How Fraudulent Platforms Imitate Genuine Brokers

SECP says that unscrupulous trading platforms tend to copy the identities of licensed securities brokers and commodities brokers to appear to be credible. They falsely endorse them even the name and photos of popular institutions, financial influencers and even senior government officials to popularize counterfeit endorsements on social media in certain cases.

Numerous such applications have advanced-appearing dashboards that display fabricated account balances, gain graphs and trade records in order to give the impression that actual trading is underway. Some of these platforms can give users small withdrawals initially, to develop the initial trust. What is more is that when the deposits are larger the scammers will usually block access or make the withdrawals unusable permanently and the victims will be left with great losses.

Only SECP-Licensed Brokers Can Offer Trading Services

The regulator has emphasized that putting aside the licensing of brokers in Pakistan, securities brokers and futures market brokers are the only legally authorized people in Pakistan to provide trading services. Any online platform, application or person that provides investment, trading or advisory services without being registered is acting illegally and must be avoided.

To ensure that the citizens can confirm the legitimacy of the persons, SECP has posted full lists of licensed brokers on its official site. The Pakistan stock exchange and the Pakistan Mercantile Exchange websites provide similar lists. It has been strongly recommended that the investors go through these official resources and verify the name, licence number and contact details of any broker before giving out money.

Steps Investors Should Take Before Investing

Steps Investors Should Take Before Investing SECP has advised investors against putting their money in any platform or individual that cannot be authenticated using the official avenue. Before opening an account or transferring money, people need to ensure that: the broker is registered on SECP and exchange websites; the details of the broker are reflected on the app or a web site; and the payment methods are safe and traceable as opposed to using personal bank accounts or unofficial means.

Unsolicited messages that an investor gets via WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Tik Tok or any other social media platform enticing them to join a special trading group, insider tips or exclusive guaranteed-return programs should also raise a red flag. The main objective of such cases is in nearly all instances to accumulate deposits within the shortest time possible and vanish, and not to offer any form of real investment service.

Protecting Personal Data and Reporting Scams

The regulator has also reminded the people against the information-sharing of personal details or financial situations with strangers on the Internet. CNIC numbers, bank accounts, ATM or debit card numbers, one-time passwords, mobile wallet PINs, etc. are not to be shared in the chat or on unreliable sites. These data may be exploited with a lot of ease to resort to financial scams and identity theft.

SECP has urged the victims and would-be victims to report suspicious apps, websites and social media pages to the concerned agencies which include the Commission, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and the law enforcement agencies. Investigators can act faster with the help of screenshots, a record of transactions and details of the platform. Through caution, checking the licence and avoidance of being pressured into high-risk trading applications, investors will have a high probability of not becoming victims of fake trading apps that masquerade as approved brokers.
