The State Bank of Pakistan and IFC sign an agreement to expand local currency financing, reduce dollar dependency, and promote sustainable private sector growth.
SBP and IFC Sign Landmark Agreement
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the international financial corporation (IFC), which is the affiliate of the world bank group signed historic agreement to increase financing in local currency and to empower the private sector in Pakistan. The transaction will enable IFC to control currency risk more effectively and the investments made will be in the Pakistani rupee and less reliance of the country on borrowing in U.S. dollars.
Expanding Local Currency Financing
Under an International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) agreement, IFC will have a chance to finance in local currency to support business that generates revenues in rupees so that it is not affected by exchange fluctuations. It is believed that through this initiative, financing opportunities will be opened up to the major sectors of the economy, business will be expanded and jobs created in the country.
Reducing Currency Risk and Boosting Confidence
Currency risk has been a major problem to firms in the emerging markets like Pakistan. Companies earning locally and borrowing in foreign currency are of special concern to fluctuations in the exchange rate. The SBP-IFC partnership will help improve the financial stability level by encouraging the use of rupee in financing and creating trust in both domestic and foreign investors.
Statements from Leadership
SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad emphasised on the importance of encouraging the growth of the private sector in order to achieve sustainable economic development in Pakistan. He said that the joint venture with IFC will create a better financing opportunity of businesses in local currency and financial inclusion. Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank Group John Gandolfo noted that lending local currency is a strategic priority of the World Bank Group and a boost of the growth of the economy of developing economies.
Supporting SBP’s Vision 2028
The contract fits well with the Vision 2028 of SBP that aims at establishing a stable and inclusive financial ecosystem. The program helps the central bank to achieve its objectives of enhancing liquidity, diversifying sources of funds, and responsible lending behaviours via creative financial alliances. It supports, as well, Pakistan to enhance its macroeconomic base as well as to receive sustainable investment flows.
IFC’s Continued Engagement in Pakistan
The IFC which is pledging record 71.7 billion dollars around the world in fiscal year 2025 has been working in Pakistan with programs in support of renewable energy, small medium enterprises (SMEs), and financial inclusion. The new SBP-IFC collaboration is based on these initiatives, which tend to expand access to cheap rupee finance, stimulate the development of capital markets, and lessen reliance on dollar-denominated debts.
A Step Toward Economic Resilience
Analysts have said that this partnership might be a tipping point in the financial system of Pakistan because the currency would be stable and would lead to sustainable economic development. This increase in local financing mechanisms will mean that Pakistan can be more resistant to the global currency fluctuations and develop a more strong economy in the long term.
