Rupee Extends Winning Streak to 85 Days Against US Dollar

The Pakistani rupee has closed stronger against the US dollar for the 85th straight session, with steady gains in the interbank market and mixed movement against other major currencies.

PKR Posts Another Gain Against the US Dollar

The Pakistani rupee (PKR) continued its remarkable run in the interbank market, closing stronger against the US dollar for the 85th consecutive trading day on Thursday.

Data from the interbank session showed the PKR settling at 279.87 against the greenback, after gaining three paisas compared to the previous close. While the day-on-day move appears small, the persistent streak of marginal gains and stability has drawn attention from market watchers who were previously concerned about sharp swings in the exchange rate.

The extended run of positive closes reflects a period of relatively calm trading conditions, supported by improved foreign exchange inflows, tighter regulatory oversight on speculative activity and a more balanced demand-supply position in the interbank market.

Mixed Performance Against Other Major Currencies

Alongside its modest rise against the US dollar, the rupee posted a mixed performance against other major currencies in the interbank market.

On the positive side, the PKR ended the session in green against the UAE dirham (AED) and the Saudi riyal (SAR), continuing to show stability against currencies that are closely watched by overseas Pakistanis and importers of fuel and other commodities priced in Gulf currencies.

The rupee also gained 28 paisas against the British pound (GBP), reflecting some relief for students, travellers and importers with sterling-denominated obligations.

However, the PKR weakened against several other currencies. It lost Rs. 1.49 against the Australian dollar (AUD), and also recorded minor losses versus the Malaysian ringgit (MYR), Chinese yuan (CNY) and Canadian dollar (CAD). These shifts highlight how currency movements can differ across markets, even when the rupee appears broadly stable against the US dollar.

Recent Interbank Rates Show Gradual, Not Dramatic, Moves

Interbank data for the past three sessions underline the pattern of incremental changes rather than sharp volatility. Between 20 and 22 January 2026, the rupee’s rate against the US dollar moved from 279.9116 to 279.8728, a net gain of just over three paisas across the period.

During the same dates, the PKR–euro (EUR) rate moved between 327.1886 and 327.2413, while the PKR–GBP rate eased from 377.2788 to 375.8413, indicating small but noticeable adjustments in favour of the rupee against some European currencies.

Movements against the Australian dollar, Malaysian ringgit, Chinese yuan and Canadian dollar were more mixed, with the rupee losing ground in some pairs while remaining broadly range-bound in others.

For businesses and individuals, this pattern means that while headline sentiment around the dollar has improved, those dealing in non-dollar currencies still need to monitor cross-rates closely, particularly when planning foreign payments for education, travel, imports or debt servicing.

What the 85-Day Streak Means for Businesses and Consumers

The rupee’s 85-day winning streak against the US dollar is being seen as a sign of improving confidence in Pakistan’s foreign exchange management and overall macroeconomic outlook. A more predictable exchange rate helps businesses price contracts, plan imports and manage working capital with greater certainty.

For importers of fuel, machinery, raw materials and essential goods, a stable or gradually strengthening rupee can help ease cost pressures, even if global commodity prices remain volatile. Over time, this may also reduce the pass-through impact on domestic inflation, though the effect tends to appear with a lag.

For ordinary consumers, the impact is more indirect but still important. A calmer currency environment can support lower inflation expectations, ease pressure on interest rates and improve sentiment in sectors like housing, retail and autos, which are sensitive to financing costs and import prices.

However, analysts also caution that exchange rate stability must be supported by continued discipline in fiscal management, reforms to boost exports, and sustained inflows from remittances, investment and multilateral partners. Without these fundamentals, any streak—no matter how long—can come under pressure.

For now, the rupee’s run of 85 consecutive positive closes against the US dollar offers a rare stretch of continuity in a market that has seen sharp swings in recent years, giving policymakers and market participants a breathing space to focus on longer-term reforms.
