Balochistan has approved a People’s Train Service between Quetta and Kuchlak, with Rs. 1.4 billion in funding and plans to expand rail links to more districts.
People’s Train Service Announced for Quetta–Kuchlak
The Balochistan government has formally announced the launch of a People’s Train Service between Quetta and Kuchlak, aimed at providing safer, cheaper and more reliable daily transport for local passengers. The decision is part of a wider plan to revive rail connectivity in the province and reduce pressure on road traffic.
According to the provincial government, around Rs. 1.4 billion will be released for the project in the coming days. This initial funding will be used to upgrade track, signalling and passenger facilities on the Quetta–Kuchlak section so that regular train operations can begin as early as possible.
Joint Initiative by Balochistan Government and Pakistan Railways
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti during a meeting with Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi at the Chief Minister Secretariat. The meeting focused on reviving key railway projects in Balochistan through a joint framework between the province and Pakistan Railways.
Officials present at the meeting said both sides reached an agreement in principle to move ahead with several joint development projects, with the Quetta–Kuchlak People’s Train Service at the top of the list. The federal minister welcomed the decision, noting that this is the first time in the history of Pakistan Railways that a provincial government has taken such an initiative under the devolution framework.
Hanif Abbasi described the project as a positive example of cooperation between the federation and the provinces. He added that while other provinces have also shown interest in local railway services, Balochistan has taken the lead by committing funds and political support to a concrete project.
Funding, Stations and Infrastructure Upgrades
Under the agreed plan, the People’s Train Service will operate as a joint effort between Pakistan Railways and the Balochistan government. The provincial government will finance the construction of new railway stations and the upgrading of existing infrastructure along the Quetta–Kuchlak route.
This includes improving platforms, waiting areas, ticket counters, lighting and security, as well as repairing and strengthening the track where needed. With dedicated funding, authorities hope to offer passengers a cleaner and more comfortable travel experience compared to current road-based options.
The federal minister stressed that modern, well-maintained infrastructure is essential if rail is to compete with road transport. Better stations and reliable timetables can encourage people to choose trains for daily commuting, which in turn can reduce congestion and accidents on highways.
Future Expansion to Mastung, Pishin and Other Areas
Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has made it clear that the Quetta–Kuchlak service is only the first step. If the train proves successful in terms of ridership and operations, the provincial government plans to extend similar services to Mastung, Pishin and other districts of Balochistan.
Expanding the network would give more communities affordable access to major cities, educational institutions, markets and healthcare facilities. For students, daily wage earners and small business owners, a low-cost and predictable train service can significantly reduce travel time and expenses.
Officials believe that improved connectivity will also support local trade by making it easier to move goods between rural areas and urban centres. Over time, stronger rail links could help integrate Balochistan more closely with national supply chains and economic corridors.

For residents of Quetta, Kuchlak and nearby areas, the People’s Train Service has the potential to change everyday travel. A dedicated passenger service can offer a safer alternative to overloaded vans and buses on busy roads, especially during peak hours and bad weather.

Passengers will know departure and arrival times in advance, allowing them to plan work, school and personal commitments more efficiently.
