Quetta International Airport has attained an international reputation since the newly constructed runway won the FIDIC Asia-Pacific Engineering Excellence Award. This milestone was commemorated through the ceremony held at the Government of Pakistan, and the ceremony was honoured by the Governor of the same, being held at Islamabad, in which the Pakistan Airports Authority, as well as consultancy teams of the project, were honoured.
Quetta Airport Runway Honoured with International Award
The FIDIC Asia-Pacific Engineering Excellence Award is among the most prestigious honours in the engineering and infrastructure business within the region. The project in Quetta Airport was a runway construction and it was recognized with its exceptional design, planning and technical application that made it one of the best airport runways in Asia-Pacific.
Engineering Feat: Runway Built Without Closing Airport
One of the major highlights in the project was the completion of the runway without arresting the operations in the airport. To the reconstruction- which was undertaken at a projected expenditure of PKR 5 billion- can be attributed world-class project management and operational survive powers. During the construction, the regular flights were maintained which caused minimum inconvenience to passengers and to the airlines as well.
Exemplary Planning and Safety Recognized by FIDIC
The award took particular notice of the high standards of safety and technical competence achieved in the project. Pakistan Airport Authority and those consultancy teams were all commended due to having coordinated well with each other and following international codes of engineering. The new runway has become the longest and strongest rigid runway of the region and is capable of supporting a wide variety of modern aircraft with increased safety and efficiency.
A Milestone for Pakistan Airports Authority
The award is a milestone in the progress of the Pakistan Airports Authority in cooperation with the industry partners in upgrading the airport infrastructure in Pakistan. On 31 May 2023 PIA flight PK 3250 (inbound) arrived in Quetta successfully and landed on the new runway this saw the dawn of a new era of increased and enhanced operational capacity in Quetta International Airport.

Not only does this award-winning runway enhance passenger and cargo traffic within Balochistan, but it also enhances regional and international connectivity. It has become a new standard in ensuring airport engineering and project delivery in Pakistan, which represents an increase in the nationwide ability to handle sophisticated infrastructure development.
