PSX Slips Below 158,000 as Regional War Fears Hit Investor Mood

March 7, 2026Zayn0

KSE-100 fell 3,714 points to 157,496 as investors priced in escalating regional conflict risk next week, dragging volumes higher and pushing most shares into the red.

What happened: KSE-100 drops sharply on Friday

Pakistan stocks recorded a heavy session on Friday as the benchmark KSE-100 index fell below the 158,000 mark. The index closed at 157,496 points after losing 3,714 points, a decline of about 2.3% from the previous close of 161,210.

The selling was broad-based. Market data showed 567 companies traded during the day, with 311 stocks closing lower, 105 finishing higher, and 151 ending unchanged. Total trading activity reached about 196 million shares, sswhile the value of shares at close was reported around Rs. 18.78 billion.

In simple terms, the market mood turned defensive. When a large number of companies close in the red on the same day, it usually indicates risk-off positioning rather than stock-specific issues.

Why investors sold: expectations of more regional chaos next week

Market watchers linked the selloff to rising uncertainty tied to the ongoing US-Israeli military operation and fears of escalation involving Iran. Analysts quoted in local coverage said there were no clear signs that Iran’s internal grip on power had weakened, such as large-scale defections or public uprisings.

At the same time, investors are worried that Iran could increase and widen its response in the coming week. When geopolitical risk rises, investors tend to reduce exposure to equities, especially in emerging markets where sentiment can turn quickly.

This behaviour is common: war risk can affect oil prices, shipping costs, and overall inflation expectations. Even if Pakistan is not directly involved, the market reacts because regional instability increases uncertainty for businesses, imports, and currency conditions.

What the daily market numbers tell us about sentiment

A fall of more than 3,700 points in one session is a clear sign of panic-style selling or aggressive de-risking. Such moves often happen when traders expect bad news over the weekend or fear a negative start next week.

The advance–decline picture also matters. With 311 losers versus 105 gainers, selling pressure was stronger than selective buying. This usually indicates that investors are not focusing on fundamentals in the short term; they are focusing on safety and liquidity.

Trading volumes can rise during selloffs because investors rush to exit positions, stop-loss triggers activate, and short-term traders increase activity. The reported 196 million shares traded suggests the market saw heavy participation rather than a quiet decline.

Top volume movers: where activity was concentrated

The most traded shares during the session included several well-known names across energy, telecom, and banking. Based on the top volume list, the most active scrips were:

  • KEL: Rs 7.81 (change -0.24), volume 36,917,726
    • CNERGY: Rs 6.70 (change -0.28), volume 22,424,861
    • UNITY: Rs 9.46 (change -0.62), volume 19,052,764
    • HASCOL: Rs 16.21 (change -0.23), volume 17,094,881
    • BOP: Rs 28.28 (change -0.93), volume 14,603,681
    • NCPL: Rs 65.37 (change -3.04), volume 12,958,520
    • WTL: Rs 1.26 (change -0.03), volume 11,873,904

High volume does not always mean positive interest. On red days, high volume often reflects heavy selling, profit-taking, and quick trades as investors reposition.

What investors should watch next week

Next week’s direction will likely depend on two things: news flow from the regional conflict and how global markets react, especially oil and shipping indicators. If escalation headlines continue, risk assets may stay under pressure and PSX can see more volatility.

Local factors also matter. Traders will watch the rupee, fuel price expectations, and any policy signals around inflation management. When oil and freight costs rise, Pakistan’s import bill can increase, which can feed into broader market concerns.

For investors, the practical approach is to stay disciplined. Avoid panic decisions based on rumours, focus on official updates, and manage risk with position sizing. Short-term volatility can be sharp, so it helps to separate long-term investing from short-term trading. If uncertainty reduces and global sentiment stabilises, PSX can recover quickly. But if the region deteriorates further, markets may remain cautious until there is clearer visibility.
