Pakistan Stock Exchange’s KSE-100 index closed above 185,000 after a 2,653-point rally, with banks leading gains and UBL becoming the largest listed company.

KSE-100 Index Surges to New All-Time High

The benchmark KSE-100 index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) continued its record-breaking run on Tuesday, closing above the historic 185,000 level for the first time. The index gained 1.45 percent, or 2,653 points, to settle at 185,062, after touching an intraday high of 185,481, up 1.68 percent or 3,073 points at its peak.

Market data showed that 596,928,682 shares changed hands during the session, with the total value of traded shares reaching Rs. 67.75 billion by the close. Overall participation remained healthy, reflecting strong interest from both institutional and retail investors as the market responded positively to sector-specific news flows and improved sentiment around equities.

Banks Drive Gains as Market Breadth Stays Positive

Market breadth stayed supportive of the rally, with 563 companies recording trades over the course of the day. Out of these, 238 stocks advanced, 218 declined and 107 remained unchanged, indicating a broadly positive, though selective, buying trend across the board.

Heavyweight banks were at the centre of Tuesday’s advance. MCB Pakistan (MCB PA) surged 7.90 percent, United Bank Limited (UBL) climbed 3.06 percent and Meezan Bank (MEBL) added 4.98 percent. Together, these financial sector giants contributed a major share of the overall index gains, underlining the dominant role of banks in the KSE-100’s current upward move.

Energy and Fertiliser Stocks See Mixed Moves

Not all major sectors participated in the rally. In the energy space, Pakistan State Oil’s subsidiary PSEL slumped 5.52 percent, putting pressure on the broader oil and gas group. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) also slipped by 1.15 percent, while Engro Fertilizers (EFERT) declined 1.05 percent, signalling some profit-taking in defensive and dividend-heavy names after their recent runs.

The mixed performance in energy and fertiliser stocks suggests that investors are becoming more selective, rotating capital towards sectors and scrips where they see stronger earnings momentum or policy support, while booking gains in counters that have already rallied sharply.

Policy Boost Lifts AIRLINK in Tech and Telecom Space

In the technology and telecom segment, AIRLINK stood out with a strong move, rallying 6.62 percent during the session. The stock reacted positively after the government announced the Mobile and Electronic Devices Manufacturing Policy 2026–33, which includes a proposed ban on the import of used mobile phones.

The market interpreted the new policy framework as a structural positive for local assemblers and manufacturers, who could benefit from reduced competition from used imports and greater incentives to invest in domestic production. This triggered robust buying interest in AIRLINK as investors positioned for potential growth in Pakistan’s handset and electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

UBL Becomes the Largest Listed Company by Market Cap

A significant milestone was recorded in the banking sector as United Bank Limited (UBL) became the largest listed company on the PSX by market capitalisation during Tuesday’s session. With its market value crossing approximately 4.6 billion dollars, UBL overtook oil and gas heavyweight OGDC, marking a notable shift in market leadership from energy to financials.

This change in the top slot highlights how investor focus has shifted towards the banking sector, supported by expectations of robust profitability, stronger asset quality and potential dividend payouts. It also underlines the growing weight of financials in the overall index, which could shape future market moves if the sector continues to outperform.

Top Volume Leaders on the PSX Today

Trading activity remained concentrated in a handful of actively traded names. K-Electric (PSX: KEL) led the volume chart with over 109 million shares changing hands, followed by banking, port and telecom plays. The detailed volume breakdown for the session is given below.
