PSL 11 will use a new player auction model from March 2026, with stricter retention rules, a bigger salary purse and fresh options for local and overseas stars.
PSL Switches From Draft to Auction After a Decade
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has confirmed a major change in how teams will build their squads, announcing that PSL 11 will be the first season to use a Player Auction Model instead of the long-standing Player Draft system. The shift comes after ten seasons of draft-based squad building and is being presented as a move to improve competitive balance, increase transparency and give players better earning opportunities.
Under the traditional draft model, franchises picked players in fixed rounds from set categories, often relying on pre-arranged understandings and retention deals to keep their cores intact. The new auction approach is expected to create a more open market, where teams bid for players in real time and salary values are determined more directly by demand.
New Retention Limits and Removal of Old Rules
Alongside the shift to auctions, the PSL has tightened rules on how many players franchises can retain before PSL 11. Each team will now be allowed to retain a maximum of four players, with only one retention permitted per category.
In another significant change, the PSL has removed the Mentor, Brand Ambassador and Right to Match (RTM) mechanisms for PSL 11. These rules previously gave teams extra tools to hold onto star names or bring them back at controlled prices. Their removal is intended to widen the player pool available at the auction and reduce structural advantages for sides that had built long-running squads around a few marquee cricketers.
Space for New Franchises and Fresh Overseas Talent
The league has also outlined a pathway for any newly inducted franchises ahead of PSL 11. If new teams join the competition, they will be allowed to select and retain four players from the available player pool before the main auction takes place. This is meant to help new entrants assemble a basic core and remain competitive from their first season, rather than starting from scratch against established squads.
In addition, each franchise will be granted one direct signing of an overseas player, on the condition that the chosen cricketer did not feature in PSL 10. This special slot is designed to bring fresh international talent into the league, giving teams a chance to introduce new faces outside the auction list.
Bigger Salary Purse to Attract Top Talent
To support the new auction system and strengthen the commercial outlook of the league, the PSL has increased the player salary purse to $1.6 million per franchise. A higher spending cap is expected to encourage more aggressive bidding, particularly for in-form local performers and globally recognised overseas stars.
For players, the updated structure promises clearer salary signals and the possibility of earning more in line with performance. For fans, auctions are often seen as an entertaining spectacle, as they reveal how teams value different skill sets and force franchises to make tough choices under budget pressure. The PSL will be aiming to tap into that drama while still maintaining a strong cricketing product on the field.
PSL 11 Start Date, New Venue and What Comes Next
The PSL has confirmed that PSL 11 will begin on March 26, 2026, marking the league’s return after the tenth edition. In another important update, Faisalabad has been added as an official venue, expanding the tournament’s footprint and giving fans in the region a chance to see PSL action live. Details on the full match schedule, venue breakdown and auction event date are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
League officials say further information regarding auction procedures, player categories and operational guidelines will be shared in due course. Franchises now face a crucial planning phase: deciding which four players to retain, which overseas star to sign directly and how to shape their auction strategy around a $1.6 million purse. With so many changes on and off the field, PSL 11 is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched seasons in the league’s history.
