Outsourcing of Passenger Trains
Passenger trains are to be outsourced by Pakistan Railways, as confirmed by Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Minister of Railways. The choice represents a significant shift in managing the sector, aiming to increase transparency, enhance service quality, and encourage the involvement of small and medium-sized investors. The ministry will also review the current contracts in place with the new system to determine whether they meet the standards.
Adjusted Revenue Goals and Teams
At a top-level conference of the Railways Headquarters, Abbasi granted changes to yearly train objectives in terms of earnings. To coordinate such an undertaking, a special committee has been established to ensure that the ministry is accountable and achieves better financial performance despite the limited resources available.
Safety Department Upgraded
The Safety Department has been elevated to a full Directorate to enhance operational safety. They have also assigned new officers and staff, enabling the department to be more active in monitoring and enforcing safety standards. This reform will lead to increased confidence among passengers and reduce the risk of accidents.
Better Staffing Services
The conditions of the rest houses for the guards and drivers were also examined by the minister, given the crucial role played by railway personnel. Facilities at Rohri, Khanpur, and Khanewal have been ordered to be upgraded immediately. To enhance the working environment, the installation of air conditioning, modern kitchens, and shared dining facilities will be improved.
Freight Operations Expansion
Abbasi stated that he was pleased with the freight activity and assured that by March 30, 295 high-capacity freight wagons would be introduced. Moreover, freight booking will be completely transitioned to an online booking system next week, thereby ensuring transparency, minimizing manual errors, and making logistics management more efficient.
Improvement of Passenger Services
Pakistan Railways is also trying to improve passenger services. The Shalimar Express will soon be fitted with a new AC Standard coach and an AC Parlour coach, while refurbished coaches from the Lahore-Rawalpindi railway cars are expected to be introduced by November 11. These upgrades are to enhance the customer experience and lure more customers to train transport.
Conclusion
Despite the lack of resources, Pakistan Railways actively pursues grand reforms, such as outsourcing through open auctions, modernization of safety protocols, digital freight booking, and provision of appropriate passenger facilities. Such efforts will support the sector in the Pakistani economy and offer citizens more stable, comfortable, and transparent services.
