Pakistan Railways to Hire 417 New Assistant Train Drivers

December 27, 2025Zayn0

Pakistan Railways is launching a large recruitment drive to hire 417 assistant train drivers nationwide, aiming to ease staff shortages and improve train operations across all major divisions.

Large-Scale Recruitment Drive to Address Driver Shortage

Pakistan Railways has announced a major recruitment drive to fill hundreds of vacant posts for assistant train drivers, in a move aimed at tackling longstanding staff shortages and improving train operations across the country. According to official sources, a total of 417 assistant train drivers will be hired under the new plan. Railway authorities say the fresh intake is essential to maintain schedules, operate additional services where needed and reduce the workload on existing drivers, many of whom have been handling extended duties due to limited staff. The decision reflects growing recognition that safe and reliable train services depend heavily on having enough trained drivers available in every division.

Vacancies Distributed Across Karachi, Sukkur, Lahore and Other Divisions

The newly announced vacancies will be distributed across Pakistan Railways’ key operational divisions. The highest number of posts has been allocated to the Karachi division, which will receive 182 assistant train drivers. This is followed by 66 posts in Sukkur, 51 in Multan, 33 in Peshawar, 30 in Rawalpindi, 29 in Quetta and 26 in Lahore. Officials say this distribution reflects both the current workload and future expansion plans in each region, with Karachi handling a significant share of passenger and freight traffic. By strengthening driver capacity in all divisions, Pakistan Railways aims to reduce delays, improve punctuality and ensure that locomotives are not left idle simply because trained staff are unavailable.

Matric and Three-Year DAE Required for Eligibility

To apply for the assistant train driver posts, candidates will need to meet specific education and technical qualification standards. Railway officials have confirmed that applicants must have passed matriculation and hold a three-year Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE). Diploma holders in Mechanical, Electrical, Information Technology (IT) or Automobile Technology will be considered eligible for the vacancies. The combination of matric education and a technical diploma is designed to ensure that new recruits have both basic academic grounding and hands-on technical knowledge, which is crucial for understanding locomotive systems, safety procedures and troubleshooting on the move. Successful candidates will also be expected to undergo further departmental training before they are allowed to operate trains on the network.

Quota Policy Reserves Seats for Railway Families, Minorities and Orphans

The recruitment process will follow the government’s quota policy to ensure fair representation of different groups. According to the announced breakdown, 60 percent of the seats will be filled on open merit, allowing candidates from all backgrounds to compete based on their performance. Twenty percent of the posts have been reserved for children of railway employees, recognising the contribution of existing staff and offering opportunities for their families. A further 10 percent of seats are allocated for ex-servicemen, providing a pathway for retired military personnel to join Pakistan Railways. In addition, 5 percent of the quota has been set aside for minorities and another 5 percent for orphan candidates. Officials say this structure is intended to create a balanced intake that reflects social inclusion while still prioritising merit and competence.

Stronger Operations and Better Service Quality the Main Goal

Pakistan Railways has linked the recruitment drive directly to its wider push for improved service delivery. With more assistant train drivers in place, the organisation expects to run trains more reliably, reduce cancellations due to staff shortages and enhance overall safety on the tracks. Additional trained staff can also help in launching new services, supporting freight operations and ensuring better rest cycles for existing drivers, which is important for reducing fatigue-related risks. For young technical diploma holders, the new positions offer a chance to build stable careers in a key national institution, with clear promotion pathways over time. As the recruitment process moves forward, candidates are being advised to carefully review the eligibility criteria, quota details and application timelines once formal advertisements are issued, so they can submit complete applications and compete effectively for the available posts.
