Pakistan Faces Nationwide Internet Slowdown in October 2025

October 1, 2025Zayn0

Pakistan internet slowed nationwide on Tuesday due to upstream provider fault and undersea cable cuts, affecting connectivity and causing widespread outages.

Sudden Internet Disruption Across Pakistan

Late Tuesday evening, internet users throughout Pakistan began experiencing a severe drop in connectivity, with repeated timeouts and websites failing to load. According to outage monitoring platforms, complaints rose simultaneously with those from various internet service providers (ISPs), indicating a national issue. The outage quickly became one of the worst slowdowns in recent months, affecting both business users and casual users who depended on stable connections.

Nayatel Confirms Upstream Fault

In an official statement, one of Pakistan’s leading ISPs, Nayatel, announced that the slowdown was due to a fault at one of its upstream sources. The company observed that the engineers were working on the problem, and they had an estimated time to restore at 1:15 a.m. While localized outages are not unusual, the scope of the slowdown indicated something more systemic that spread across networks nationwide.

Undersea Cable Cuts Aggravate Connectivity Issues

The timing of this incident is especially problematic, as international connectivity from Pakistan remains under strain following multiple submarine cable cuts in the Red Sea earlier this month. These cables are part of vital systems such as SMW4 and IMEWE, which carry the internet traffic between Asia and Europe. With traffic diverted onto longer alternative routes, additional challenges have also already been imposed on users, including increased latency, reduced bandwidth, and unstable connections. Repairs to the damaged cables are expected to take between four and five weeks, extending the threat of more bottlenecks.

Effects on Users and Enterprises

For end-users, the slowdown impacted online learning platforms, streaming services, and digital communication tools. Businesses that rely on cloud-based services, remote work platforms, and e-commerce transactions were also affected by delays, underscoring the importance of stable international connectivity to Pakistan’s digital economy. According to technology experts, prolonged blackouts would have a bad impact on productivity, especially for small and medium enterprises.

Temporary Relief Measures

Some users resorted to workarounds by changing their DNS settings, going through VPN servers nearer Europe or temporarily switching to mobile data operators. However, experts warn that these measures are temporary and insufficient to completely resolve the bandwidth congestion resulting from upstream problems and damaged cables. While dashboards like Downdetector are still useful for real-time updates, it may not be until global infrastructure repairs are made and upstream providers reintroduce normal capacity that we see a complete stoppage of outages.

Looking Ahead

The recent internet slowdown serves as a wake-up call to the vulnerability of Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, which relies heavily on several undersea cable systems. To minimize dependence on scarce pathways, experts have called on policymakers and regulators to diversify connectivity paths and invest in redundant systems. Until then, disruptions like that of Tuesday are likely to remain a frequent challenge that will need both short-term mitigation and long-term strategic planning.
