Pakistan Ranks Among Top 10 Countries for Cheapest Internet in the World
One of the reasons Pakistan leads globally is that it has some of the lowest prices for mobile internet around the world. According to the recently released Economic Survey 2024–25, the cost of 1 GB of mobile data in Pakistan dropped to just Rs. 27.0 during the first half of FY 2025. This marks a sharp 65% decline from the Rs. 77.1 per GB recorded in FY 2018.
The decline in mobile data costs is attributed to the positive impact of regulatory changes and increased competition among companies in the industry. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), working closely with telecom operators, has fostered an environment that promotes affordability while maintaining service quality and ensuring industry viability.
Global and Regional Comparisons
At just US$0.10 per GB, Pakistan now holds the distinction of having the lowest data rates in South Asia and ranks among the six lowest globally. This approach to pricing internet services enables Pakistan to lead the way in providing digital access to many other countries.
PTA’s Role and Policy Vision
Those working at the PTA believe that effective regulation and proper spectrum planning have contributed to a steady decline in mobile internet prices. They emphasize that their long-term vision prioritizes digital inclusion, consumer affordability, and market sustainability. Such steps have ensured that telecom operators do not lose money, even if prices are cutting into their profits.
PTA members remain focused on striking a balance between supporting the industry’s growth and protecting the public. As education, online shopping, financial services, and companies that allow people to work remotely become increasingly online, affordable internet networks are helping to bridge the digital divide.
Implications for Digital Access and Inclusion
As mobile data becomes more affordable, more people are expected to connect to the internet in both urban and rural areas. Younger people, freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote learners can benefit the most from this offer.
The significant shift by people to the internet on mobile devices supports plans to educate people about technology and boost the country’s innovative economy.
With ongoing work on infrastructure and the introduction of 5G technologies, Pakistan is expected to maintain its position as a leader in digital services, both in terms of coverage and affordability.
