Key Takeaways

  • NAB Karachi has recovered 80 acres of government land in Hyderabad.
  • The land is valued at around Rs. 6 billion and lies in Deh Ganjo Takkar.
  • Officials say the land was allegedly allotted to Bahria Town at a much lower price.
  • The allotment was cancelled after conditions linked to the land were not met.
  • The case is part of wider legal action involving land transfers and housing projects.

Prime Hyderabad Land Recovered After NAB Action

The National Accountability Bureau Karachi has recovered 80 acres of government land in Hyderabad that was allegedly allotted illegally to Bahria Town. According to the bureau, the recovered land is located in Deh Ganjo Takkar within the Gulshan-i-Sarmast housing scheme and carries an estimated value of around Rs. 6 billion.

The recovery is important because the land is described as prime public property in a growing part of Hyderabad. In Pakistan, such land disputes often raise serious questions about public assets, housing schemes, institutional approvals and the role of government departments in protecting state-owned land.

Why the Rs. 6 Billion Land Recovery Matters

NAB said Bahria Town had obtained possession of the land through an alleged illegal allotment at a price of Rs. 383 million, which was far below the stated market value. The bureau also claimed that the amount was not fully paid, adding another financial issue to the case.

For ordinary citizens, the case matters because government land is meant to serve public interest. When valuable land is transferred at unusually low rates or used outside its approved purpose, it can cause major losses to the public exchequer and weaken trust in public institutions.

Allotment Conditions And University Plan Came Under Scrutiny

According to NAB, the land was originally allocated for the establishment of a university. Such allotments normally come with specific conditions, including the intended use of land, payment schedule, development obligations and timelines for public benefit projects.

The bureau stated that Bahria Town failed to meet the conditions attached to the allotment. After NAB’s intervention, the Hyderabad Development Authority cancelled the allotment, repossessed the land and forfeited the partially paid amount. This means the land has now returned to the custody of the relevant public authority.

Legal Pressure Builds In Wider Land Cases

The Hyderabad land recovery comes at a time when wider legal proceedings involving Bahria Town owner Malik Riaz, his son and other individuals are already under way. Last week, an accountability court issued perpetual arrest warrants against Malik Riaz, his son and others in connection with a land grab case.

NAB had earlier filed a reference in 2025 against Bahria Town owners, government officials and political figures over the alleged illegal transfer and conversion of government land for private housing projects. These proceedings show that land-related accountability cases remain a major focus for anti-corruption authorities.

Public Land Protection Remains A Bigger Governance Test

The recovery of 80 acres may be seen as a major step, but it also highlights the need for stronger systems before public land is transferred, leased or converted. Transparent auctions, proper valuation, public disclosure and strict monitoring can help reduce disputes and prevent losses in future projects.

For Hyderabad and other major cities, land is not only a commercial asset but also a planning resource for education, housing, roads, hospitals and public services. If recovered land is used properly, it can support long-term development and deliver direct benefit to citizens instead of becoming part of prolonged legal battles.
