Mobilink Bank has launched Islamic banking operations after SBP approval, pioneering Shariah-compliant microfinance and positioning JazzCash as Pakistan’s largest digital Islamic wallet.
Mobilink Bank Secures SBP License for Islamic Banking
Pakistan Mobilink Bank, the most advanced digital microfinance bank in the country has declared that it has launched its Islamic banking business which will be a milestone in the Shariah compliant finance in the microfinance industry. Formal launching was performed on the annual strategic meeting of VEON Group known as Ignite in Abu Dhabi shortly after the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) granted the Bank an Islamic Banking License.
It is on the basis of this approval that Mobilink Bank is currently equipped to provide responsible, Shariah-compliant financial services to the low income and underserved communities. The shift is supported by the increased need of the Pakistani population to get faith-based financial products and the general focus on ethical and inclusive banking solutions.
From Microfinance to Digital Islamic Banking
Islamic banking will be introduced at Mobilink Bank, and it is likely to influence the areas beyond its branch network significantly. The license also allows the JazzCash to begin providing Islamic financial products, which was the flagship digital wallet of the Bank. This may bring JazzCash Pakistan to the top of the list of the largest Shariah-compliant digital wallet that integrates the scope of a major fintech platform and a religious banking model.
Chairman Mobilink Bank, Aamir Ibrahim, and the CEO of Jazz remarked that the license would enable the Bank to satisfy increasing demands of Shariah-compliant microfinance products. He emphasized that faith-based products that are specific to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and micro-entrepreneurs can facilitate easier access to financing and encourage more economic engagement of underserved communities.
The combination of Islamic banking and digital payments will help Mobilink Bank fill the gap between the conventional microfinance and the contemporary and app-based banking. The people who used to be conservative towards conventional financial products due to their religious beliefs can now easily access the formal economy.
Branches, Windows and Nationwide Rollout Plan
During the initial stage, Mobilink Bank will launch its Islamic banking services in two separate Islamic banking units in Karachi and Peshawar. These full-fledged branches will be included on ten Islamic banking windows installed inside the existing outlets.
It is anticipated that the network will continue to grow as early as the next stage to at least fifteen dedicated Islamic branches and twenty windows. The gradual introduction will enable the Bank to pilot operations, perfect products and create awareness to the customers before expanding to the whole country.
The combination of independent branches and Islamic windows is to offer flexibility. It also allows Mobilink Bank to serve new and existing customers without having to rely on building a complete branch network which would likely require time, particularly in regions where Shariah-compliant microfinance is becoming increasingly popular.
Shariah-Compliant Products: Takmeel, Yaqeen and Umeed
Mobilink Bank as one of the products has launched three Shariah compliant products in line with the principles of Islamic finance. They constitute the first portfolio of the Bank in terms of its Islamic banking activities and more expansions are to be introduced in stages.
Their current account product is known as Takmeel which assists in daily transactions in a Shariah-directed structure. It is aimed at the customers who require a sure means of conducting day-to-day payments and receipts without violating the Islamic provisions.
The savings account, which is called Yaqeen provides an opportunity to save money in a safe manner. It dwells on transparency and sharing risks, which customers can be assured that their money is being managed in a manner that complies with the Shariah.
The Umeed product of Murabaha financing product is a transparent and halal financing product that is used to fund the individual and household requirement. The Bank under the Murabaha model buys an asset and offers it to the customer at a specified profit rate, rather than charging interest (Khan, 2001). This structure will enable the customers to have access to financing to meet some of their basic requirements like small business equipment, home renovation or education costs without interfering with their religious beliefs.
Building an Inclusive, Digital-First Islamic Ecosystem
During the launch, Haaris Mahmood Chaudhary, the President and CEO of Mobilink Bank, defined the move as part of a significant forward move in the path of the Bank towards creating an inclusive financial ecosystem that runs with digital-first and future-ready solutions.
He stressed that with the introduction of Shariah-compliant offerings, Mobilink Bank is increasing financial options to the long-under-served communities. The availability of formal finance to many low-income families and micro-entrepreneurs has been constrained not only due to geographical location and paperwork, but also to the issue of whether the products are adhering to Islamic principles.
According to the Bank, its Islamic portfolio has been structured to offer consistent, transparent and products consistent with faith that enable customers to engage more comfortably in the formal economy. Digital mediums, such as JazzCash, will be core to the provision of these services on a massive scale, particularly in remote and rural regions.
What Comes Next for Mobilink Bank and JazzCash
Mobilink Bank will keep growing its Islamic product in the near future with a more elaborate package of Shariah-compliant digital products. New products can also involve customised products to micro and small businesses, women entrepreneurs and farmers, and more specialised savings and investments.
This growth helps the Bank to enhance its overall vision of enhancing financial inclusion by responsible innovation and customer-focused service delivery. Through the integration of Islamic finance into a digital first approach, Mobilink Bank and JazzCash expect to attract millions of its customers who remain untouched by the formal banking system.
When Mobilink Bank goes digital with its Islamic microfinance, it can be considered as a new standard in the industry. It integrates three potent trends financial inclusion, the Shariah-compliant banking and mobile technology into a single integrated plan intended at inculcating more Pakistanis into the formal, documented economy.
