The Punjab government has introduced a new bus service by introducing a double-decker bus between Lahore and Sheikhupura to boost cultural and heritage tourism. The project is run by the Punjab Tourism and Archaeology Department in an attempt to bring people back to the historic sites of Punjab as well as to promote weekend tourism and economic growth in smaller districts. The service takes place on a weekly basis, every Saturday and Sunday and offers round trip excursions at a cheap cost of Rs. 1,200 per person. It is the route that links Lahore with the popular tourist attraction sites of Sheikhupura such as Hiran Minar, an architectural marvel during the Mughal era, and the shrine of renowned Punjabi poet Waris Shah. The tourists get guided tours, seats, and refreshments on the journey.
