10,000 New Teaching Posts Approved Across KP
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved the temporary recruitment of 10,000 teachers for schools across the province. The decision was taken at the provincial cabinet level and is aimed at addressing teacher shortages, keeping classes running smoothly and supporting learning outcomes for students.
According to the shared details, the new appointments will be made on a time-bound basis rather than as permanent positions. Even so, the step is being seen as an important short-term measure to fill vacant posts, reduce the burden on existing teachers and minimise disruptions to classroom teaching in both settled districts and newly merged areas.
Distribution of Posts in Settled and Merged Districts
Under the plan, a total of 5,845 temporary teachers will be hired for schools in the settled districts of KP. These include the province’s traditional administrative districts where student enrolments have been rising and existing staff strength is often under pressure.
In parallel, 4,229 posts have been reserved for schools in the merged tribal districts. These areas, which were previously part of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), have seen ongoing efforts to integrate services, improve infrastructure and expand access to education.
By setting aside a significant share of positions for the merged districts, the government aims to reduce disparities in teacher availability and support students in regions that have historically faced gaps in public service delivery. The move also signals a commitment to ensuring that integration reforms are backed by practical staffing support on the ground.
Contract Duration Based on Plain and Hilly Regions
Unlike permanent recruitment drives, this initiative is clearly time-bound and tied to the school calendar, with different contract periods for plain and hilly regions.
In the plain areas of KP, temporary appointments will run from 16 January to 31 May. This window covers the crucial teaching period leading up to examinations and the end of the academic term.
In hilly regions, where weather patterns and accessibility can affect school operations, contracts will be in effect from 1 March to 30 June. This timeline is aligned with the months when schools in these areas are typically open and able to function more regularly.
By tailoring contract periods to local conditions, the government is trying to ensure that temporary teachers are present when they are most needed, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all schedule across the entire province.
Who Will Hire the Teachers? School-Level Authorities Defined
The KP government has also clarified which officials will be responsible for recruitment at different school levels, to avoid confusion and speed up the process.
For primary schools, the relevant Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) will handle hiring. At the middle school level, recruitment will be overseen by the Deputy District Education Officer (DDEO). For high and higher secondary schools, the District Education Officer (DEO) will serve as the appointing authority.
This structure places responsibility with officers who are already familiar with local school needs, student numbers and existing staff gaps. Clear lines of authority are expected to help minimise delays, prevent overlapping roles and ensure that appointments are made where they are most urgently required.
Oversight, Salary Package and What It Means for Education
To provide oversight and community input, the Parent–Teacher Council (PTC) will monitor the recruitment process. This is intended to improve transparency, discourage favouritism and ensure that local stakeholders have a voice in how teachers are selected.
The monthly salary for the temporary teachers has been set at up to Rs25,000. While this is lower than many permanent government scales, it still offers a structured income for educated youth who are looking for experience in the education sector or waiting for longer-term recruitment.
For schools, the arrival of additional teachers—even on a temporary basis—can help reduce overcrowded classrooms, allow more focused attention on students and support continuity where posts have remained vacant. For communities, the move signals that the government recognises the urgency of staffing gaps and is willing to use interim solutions while more permanent recruitment and reforms are planned.
In the longer term, education experts say that such temporary drives should be complemented by sustained investment in permanent posts, training and facilities. However, as an immediate step, the decision to hire 10,000 temporary teachers across KP is likely to bring some relief to schools, students and parents alike.
