Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah has opened the Bhains Colony (Khalid Bin Waleed) Flyover, a Rs 1.86 billion project to ease congestion between National Highway N-5 and Mehran Highway.

New Flyover Aims to Ease Congestion in Malir

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has inaugurated the Bhains Colony Flyover, also known as the Khalid Bin Waleed Flyover, opening a key new route for traffic in Karachi. The project is expected to ease congestion in District Malir, especially around Bhains Colony and the busy Mehran Highway corridor. For years, heavy traffic and frequent jams in this area have caused delays for residents, transporters and industrial workers travelling across the eastern side of the city.

By lifting a large volume of vehicles above ground-level intersections and the nearby railway crossing, the flyover is designed to reduce both travel time and accident risk. Authorities say that safer and more predictable traffic flow will help commuters who rely on this stretch for daily travel, as well as businesses that depend on timely movement of goods between the port, industrial zones and residential areas.

Better Connectivity for Residential and Industrial Areas

The new flyover will improve connectivity for several important localities and economic hubs. It links residents of Malir and Ibrahim Hyderi more smoothly with the Export Processing Zone and other nearby employment centres. It is also expected to make it easier for commuters and freight vehicles to move between the National Highway N-5 and Mehran Highway without getting stuck at bottlenecks near Bhains Colony.

Improved access on this route is particularly significant for workers and businesses that operate along the industrial belt and coastal communities. With fewer delays and safer junctions, transporters can plan schedules more confidently, while residents may see shorter and more reliable daily journeys. Over time, the improved road link is likely to support local trade, logistics and small business activity in surrounding neighbourhoods.

Project Timeline, Cost and World Bank Support

The Bhains Colony Flyover was built by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation under the Competitive and Livable City of Karachi initiative, with financial and technical support from the World Bank. The scheme was formally approved on 21 July 2025, and construction work began on 21 September 2025. According to officials, the project was completed in just five months at a total cost of around Rs 1.865 billion, an important milestone for a major urban infrastructure scheme.

Project managers have highlighted that finishing the flyover within this condensed timeframe required close coordination between designers, contractors and government departments. Delivering a large road structure on schedule and within the approved budget is seen as a positive signal for future transport and infrastructure investments in Karachi. For citizens, the main benefit is that a long-promised solution to local congestion has become reality ahead of the next monsoon and peak travel seasons.

More Flyovers and Road Upgrades Planned for Karachi

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the Bhains Colony Flyover would provide long-term relief to commuters and help support business activity by keeping traffic moving between key industrial and commercial zones. He also announced a series of follow-up projects aimed at further improving traffic flow across Karachi’s main corridors.

The chief minister directed the Karachi mayor to complete a flyover at Azimpura within 100 days, signalling a strong push to finish ongoing works quickly. He added that Shahrah-e-Bhutto, from Qayyumabad to Kathore, would be completed within four to six weeks and later extended towards the port, while the Murghi Khana Bridge is nearing completion. Together, these projects are intended to ease pressure on existing routes, cut down travel times and support a more efficient transport network for the city’s growing population.
