Islamabad Traffic Police Set Up Eight Checkpoints for Lane Discipline

Islamabad Traffic Police have created eight new checkpoints to stop lane violations by motorcyclists, reduce wrong-way driving and make roads safer for all commuters in the capital.

Eight New Checkpoints to Target Lane Violations

The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) have established eight checkpoints across the federal capital to enforce lane discipline, especially among motorcyclists. The move is part of a broader push to curb dangerous riding habits that put both riders and other road users at risk.

According to an ITP spokesperson, traffic officers have been deployed at key locations where lane violations and sudden lane changes are frequently observed. At these points, officers are monitoring traffic flow, guiding riders back into their correct lanes and taking legal action where serious violations are detected.

By placing checkpoints on busy routes, the ITP hopes to send a clear message that ignoring lane rules will no longer be tolerated and that road safety is a shared responsibility for everyone on the road.

Why Lane Discipline Matters for Motorcyclists

The ITP spokesperson pointed out that many traffic crashes involving motorcycles occur when riders weave between lanes, cut across traffic or suddenly switch lanes without signalling. Such behaviour reduces the reaction time for cars, buses and other riders, increasing the chance of collisions.

Motorcyclists are some of the most vulnerable road users. They have little physical protection, and even low-speed accidents can lead to serious injuries or loss of life. When lane discipline is ignored, the risk of being hit from behind or side-swiped by larger vehicles increases sharply.

Proper lane use helps keep traffic predictable. When every vehicle remains in its lane and follows road markings, drivers can better anticipate each other’s movements. This simple discipline is one of the most effective ways to reduce crashes on busy city roads.

Enforcement Drive Against Wrong-Way and Unsafe Riding

The new checkpoints are part of a wider enforcement drive targeting lane violations and wrong-way driving. ITP officials say that some motorcyclists try to save time by riding against the flow of traffic, especially on service roads and at U-turns, creating extremely dangerous situations for themselves and others.

At the checkpoints, officers are stopping riders who misuse lanes, ride on the wrong side of the road or ignore basic safety rules. Depending on the severity of the offence, they may issue fines, provide on-the-spot counselling or, in serious cases, take stricter legal action.

The ITP stresses that the aim of the campaign is not only to punish offenders but also to change behaviour. By maintaining a visible presence on the roads, traffic police hope to remind riders that road rules exist to protect lives, not to inconvenience commuters.

How Riders Can Avoid Fines and Stay Safe

To avoid fines and stay safe, motorcyclists are being urged to strictly follow lane markings, avoid sudden lane changes and never ride against the flow of traffic. Wearing a helmet, obeying speed limits and using indicators when turning or changing lanes are also critical for safety.

Riders should stay in the left-most or designated motorcycle lanes where available, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid squeezing between cars at traffic signals. Simple habits such as checking mirrors before changing lanes and slowing down near crossings can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

The ITP has reminded citizens that repeated violations can lead to heavier penalties, including higher fines and possible impounding of vehicles. Following the rules not only protects the rider, but also shows respect for other road users and helps keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Helplines and ITP’s Wider Road Safety Efforts

The Islamabad Traffic Police say they remain committed to ensuring orderly traffic conditions and assisting commuters throughout the city. For guidance, complaints or information about traffic updates, citizens can contact the ITP Traffic Helpline at 1915 or reach emergency services via Pucar-15.

The lane discipline campaign is one of several initiatives launched by the ITP in recent years to improve safety, including awareness drives in schools, helmet enforcement campaigns and special operations against over-speeding and unregistered vehicles.

By combining strict enforcement with public education and easily accessible helplines, the ITP aims to create a safer road environment where every rider and driver understands that following lane discipline can help save lives.
