In a landmark move to promote sports and a healthy lifestyle, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to build 25 cricket grounds and 25 football grounds across Islamabad. These projects, combined with the construction of modern sports complexes in various sectors, are part of the city’s broader vision to improve recreational infrastructure, beautify public spaces, and foster community engagement. Officials of the CDA have confirmed that the facilities will be open to all residents, particularly the youth, to promote active living.
Vision Behind the Project
The decision was made during a meeting presided over by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, which included a high-level discussion. According to Randhawa, the initiative reflects the CDA’s commitment to enhancing public amenities and promoting sports culture in the capital. ‘Our goal is to make Islamabad a model city where sports, recreation, and urban development go hand in hand,’ he stated. The CDA feels that youth development is achievable through the use of sports infrastructure. The new grounds will be not only places where talent will be nurtured but also a safe and well-maintained recreational space. The idea is to limit the time children spend in front of screens, encourage collaboration, and instill discipline by organizing sports activities in an orderly manner.
Strategic Placement Across the City
The sports grounds will be strategically located between the sectors in Islamabad, in response to equity. Both the central and peripheral residents will be conveniently accessible to at least one cricket or football ground in the locality. Such decentralization removes travel-related obstacles and promotes sporting events at the community level. The CDA will refurbish the existing cricket and football grounds, in addition to constructing new ones. The facilities to be developed under the plan include the addition of paddle courts, the installation of modern floodlights, the enhancement of drainage works, and spectator stands to provide a better viewing experience. Access paths in the sports and recreation areas will also be modified to ensure safety and accessibility between the pedestrian bridges.
Integration with Broader Urban Development
This initiative is one of the urban development projects that entail upgrading major roads, building new underpasses to ease traffic congestion, lighting parks, revitalizing green areas, and installing modern LED lamps along the city’s streets. The CDA is working to develop colorful and multi-use community amenities by obliterating sports infrastructure and beautifying cities. Green spaces such as sports grounds are important in reducing air pollution, helping cool the city, and providing a relaxation place to the residents. There is evidence that such common grounds can boost mental health, decrease stress, and foster a stronger sense of community.
Transparency and Quality Assurance
In the project, Randhawa emphasized the importance of paying close attention to transparency and quality. Third-party audits will also be undertaken in every development initiative to confirm that they meet international construction and safety standards. ‘We are determined to deliver facilities that meet the highest benchmarks for quality and durability,’ he added.
Through the development of 50 new stadiums of the latest designs and modern complexes, Islamabad is already sticking to being the leader in the field of sports facility development and urbanization. Such endeavor not only holds the potential of providing the residents with better possibilities at recreation but a step forward towards healthier, lively and better-connected city altogether.
