The most unprecedented heat stress grips capital
On Friday, the fall-like temperature was about 50 °C, leaving Islamabad under extreme heat-related stress, with the actual air temperature recorded at 39 °C. It was a dramatic difference brought about by high humidity, coupled with high air temperatures, which drove the city into extreme weather conditions, warranting health warnings from the authorities.
What is the Heat Index, and what are the Implications of its workings?
The term heat index, also known as apparent temperature, is used to describe the combined effect of temperature and relative humidity on air temperature, estimating how warm it feels to human beings. At a heat index of 50 °C, the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke and dehydration, is extremely high, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals engaged in outdoor work.
Sudden change of temperature and Weather Report
Islamabad experienced a hectic ‘feels-like temperature of 49 with less than one hour until its temperature hit 50 oC, signifying the rapid increase in thermal discomfort. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), isolated areas in Islamabad and other parts are likely to experience falling rains later in the day, which can temporarily alleviate the unbearable heat. The department also indicated that such weather patterns are expected to continue over the next few days.
Preventative and Community Warning
Due to the extreme conditions, the government has advised residents to take shelter during the peak daytime hours, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid direct sunshine. People are also encouraged to dress in lightweight and breathable clothing and check up on the preparations of vulnerable neighbors, particularly those without proper cooling measures. Employers have also been advised to consider time adjustments in their daily operations, as well as providing necessary water storage to cater to workers working in outdoor conditions.
