Islamabad’s administration has started installing advanced M-Tag readers and opened 10 facilitation centres to enforce mandatory tags and improve traffic monitoring.
New M-Tag Readers Rolled Out Across the Capital
The Capital Territory authority and police of Islamabad have started the installation of modern M-Tag readers at strategic locations in the federal capital, which is a significant move towards technological automation of tracking traffic and imposing digital toll. According to the officials, the system is such that it identifies vehicles that are on the road without an M-Tag and enable the enforcement teams to act swiftly and specifically.
The new readers are being installed at major routes and checkpoints in such a way that the vehicles will not be stopped needlessly as the traffic is scanned. When the system is fully operational, it is hoped that it will cut down on manual checking as well as congestion at the important choke points and will also facilitate monitoring compliance with M-Tag requirements.
DC and Safe City Officials Review Installation Work
On Monday, the Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon and the Director General of Safe City inspected some of the locations to check the status of the installation drive. In their check-up, they looked at the way these devices work, their location, and the measures that require implementation in order to have effective enforcement once the system becomes functional.
The ones talked about technical problems with connectivity, data accuracy and compatibility with the available present Safe City infrastructure. The idea is to make sure that the M-tag readers are able to locate the vehicles without tags or with invalid information correctly and that alerts are sent to the enforcement teams on the spot.
The deputy commissioner emphasized this enforcement will not be random and the implementation will be systematic on the basis of digital signals generated by the devices to direct the police units deployed in the area.
Enforcement Teams to Act on Vehicles Without M-Tags
This new system will mean police teams assigned around the M- Tag readers will stop cars that are detected as non-compliant with the devices. Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon has appealed to motorists to get themselves their M-tag before it inconveniences them or they get into legal trouble when the enforcement commences.
The police have suggested that the vehicles that are spotted on the road without an M-Tag may receive huge fines or even be impounded to the nearby police stations. Not only is the objective to punish violations but also to provoke high speed compliance, in order to make the digital system work well throughout the network.
According to the officials, clear sign-boards and public awareness messages will be taken to remind the drivers about the necessity to take M-Tags registration before the strict checking is implemented on large-scale basis.
Ten Facilitation Centres Opened for Easy Registration
To facilitate the rollout, the administration has established 10 facilitation centres where principal areas of traffic have been opened in which the residents can enroll their vehicles under M-Tags. These centres are strategically located in such a way that the commuters are able to do registration in their normal routes without necessarily travelling far.
The vehicle owners can visit the facilitation centres, present their documents, attach their tag to the vehicle number and get information on the operation of the system. The officials also state that the process has been made easy to make people adopt it faster and to also minimize the lines as more people scramble to comply.
It is also anticipated that in the future the administration would consider the use of digital media and mobile crews to conduct a registration drive in the event demand surges particularly when the fines of the failure to comply are enforced to the end.
Integration with Safe City Network and Future Impact
The Safe City team is in the final stages of the technical integration, which is necessary to link the M-Tag readers onto the larger surveillance and command system of Islamabad. This will enable the vehicle flows to be monitored by a central control room, tag data check and create alerts with vehicles that travel without proper registration.
Proper vehicle identification is essential in terms of toll management as well as security at large. According to the officials, the system will allow over time aiding in the improved monitoring of stolen vehicles, signal suspicious activity and aid investigations where necessary.
The M-Tag system is considered as part of a change towards smarter, data-oriented traffic handling in the city of Islamabad in the long run. Automated readers, which enable authorities to focus on high-traffic areas and simplify registration, will help to alleviate congestion at hotspots and make law-abiding a major part of driving in the capital.
To motorists, the point which the administration complies with immediately is to procure an M-tag as soon as possible, visit the facilitation centres before it gets too busy and risk the risk of fines and having their vehicles impounded after the system becomes operational in full force.
