HEC has announced the Law-GAT 2026 schedule with online registration from March 3 and test on April 5. Check eligibility, passing marks, test pattern and centre rules.

What Is the Law-GAT and Why It Matters?

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, through its Education Testing Council (ETC), has announced the schedule for the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) 2026. The Law-GAT is a mandatory test for law graduates who wish to enroll as advocates with the Bar in Pakistan.

The exam is designed to assess whether a law graduate has the basic legal knowledge and understanding required to enter the professional field. Only those who pass the Law-GAT can move ahead in the enrollment process with the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and relevant provincial bar councils.

By centralising the test through ETC, HEC aims to maintain uniform standards and ensure that all new entrants to the legal profession meet a minimum competency benchmark before they begin practice.

Key Dates for Law-GAT 2026 Registration and Test

According to the announcement, online registration for Law-GAT 2026 will open on Tuesday, March 03, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Interested candidates will be required to complete and submit their applications through the official HEC registration portal.

The test itself is scheduled to be held on Sunday, April 05, 2026. Any changes or updates to the schedule will be communicated through the official HEC website, so candidates are advised to check the site regularly for announcements and detailed instructions.

ETC conducts the Law-GAT on a quarterly basis in major cities across Pakistan. The broader schedule for the year is listed in the 2026 ETC Test Calendar, which can also be accessed via the HEC website.

Eligibility Criteria and Attempt Limits

To be eligible for the Law-GAT, candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree in law or an equivalent qualification from a local or foreign university recognised by HEC or the Pakistan Bar Council. Graduates of both public and private institutions can apply, provided their degree is duly recognised.

However, not everyone is allowed to sit the test. Individuals who have already passed the Law-GAT in previous sessions are not eligible to apply again. Similarly, those who have exhausted all seven permitted attempts cannot register for the 2026 test.

Students who are still enrolled in an LLB or equivalent law programme and have not yet completed their degree are also ineligible. The test is strictly for completed law graduates who are now seeking professional enrollment as advocates.

Test Pattern, Passing Marks and Exam Centres

The Law-GAT 2026 will consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) covering core areas of law. The detailed curriculum and test pattern have been uploaded on the HEC website and can be downloaded by candidates for preparation.

The test carries a total of 100 marks, and candidates must secure at least 50 marks to qualify. Scoring 50 percent or more is considered a passing score. However, HEC has clarified that passing the Law-GAT alone does not give the automatic right to practice law.

Applicants can choose their preferred test centre from the list of available cities at the time of registration. ETC reserves the right to change a centre if fewer than 250 candidates select a particular location. In such cases, candidates may be shifted to the nearest available centre.

Enrollment with the Bar and How to Apply

Even after passing the Law-GAT, candidates must still meet all additional requirements set by the Pakistan Bar Council and provincial bar councils to enroll as advocates. This can include completion of practical training, submission of required documents and clearance of any further scrutiny by the regulators. Passing the Law-GAT is therefore only one step in the wider enrollment process.

To apply for the 2026 test, eligible graduates must complete online registration through the official HEC portal before the deadline. The last date for online registration is Tuesday, March 03, 2026. After submitting the form and fee, candidates should regularly check their email and the HEC website for admit cards, test-day instructions and any updates regarding centres or timings.

For further information, applicants can contact the ETC helplines or visit the HEC website, where detailed guidelines, frequently asked questions and contact details are available. Early registration and careful review of the test syllabus will help candidates prepare confidently for Law-GAT 2026 ansd move one step closer to entering the legal profession.
