ECC Approves Closure Plan
To enable the closure of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC), the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, under the chairmanship of the Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, authorized a technical supplementary grant of 30.216 billion, to support the closure. The ruling is just one step toward calibrating the financial liability of the USC to the national exchequer.
Compensation and Worker Welfare
The package passed includes severance pay, compensation, and payment of the pending dues of USC employees. Through these entitlements, the government expects to cushion the social and economic effects of the USC closure on its employees, and that some employees will be assisted through the process.
Asset Disposal and Financial Discipline
The ECC instructed the Ministry of Industries & Production to rationalize the financial needs to wind up USC. It was also ruled that the assets of USC, such as properties, would be liquidated during the current fiscal year. Asset sales are likely to cover part of the closure costs, which will make fiscal discipline more secure.
Transparency and Orderly Process
The Cabinet body emphasized that the closure had to be carried out in a well-organized and transparent manner. The disposal of assets and compensation payout to employees will be well supervised. This practice is an indicator of the government’s dualism in terms of fiscal responsibility and employee welfare.
Meeting Attendees
The important participants of the ECC meeting were the key cabinet members and officials such as Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari (virtually), Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Industry and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, federal secretaries and seniors of the concerned ministries and departments.
Conclusion
The government is determined to exercise fiscal prudence as the winding up of the Utility Stores Corporation is approved at 30.2 billion, with the primary goal of ensuring the welfare of the affected employees. The government will ensure a clear and accountable transition by integrating compensation actions with asset disposition plans.
