June 11, 2025Zayn0

As revealed in the federal budget 2025-26, the federal government has authorised the imposition of an 18 per centt sales tax on the importation of solar panels. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed this decision through his budget speech on Tuesday.

The new tax is among the measures that the Revenue Division is implementing as part of its overall effort to generate an additional Rs . 200 billion in tax revenue in the next fiscal year. As the solar sector has been expanding considerably over the past few years due to rising electricity prices and increasing environmental awareness, it is likely to undergo substantial changes as a result.

The 18% sales tax will impact the cost and accessibility of solar energy systems for residential and commercial consumers. The concern raised by industry experts is that the new tax would ease the pace of adoption of renewable energy technologies in the country, particularly when Pakistan is making efforts to switch to more sustainable sources of energy.

The Finance Minister has announced that reforms for solar electricity production are underway, and the Power Division will introduce several key changes in the coming weeks. The expected outcome of these reforms is the more efficient management of incorporating solar energy into the national grid, which would provide energy stability, wandincrease revenue collection.

Although the details of the future changes by the Power Division are not yet precise, the acceptance of this sales tax indicates a shift in government policy regarding the encouragement of renewable energy. In the past, sales tax had been waived on the importation of solar panels as a measure to promote green energy projects.

The new tax policy is likely to have an impact on the solar importers, distributors, and consumers. Players in the energy sector have urged the government to rethink or at least provide a staged implementation plan to avoid disrupting the adoption trends of solar energy.

Despite the critics, government officials argue that the tax is a logical measure to expand the tax base and enhance fiscal stability, especially at a time when the country is experiencing persistent economic difficulties.

To conclude, the 18 per centt sales tax on solar panel importsrepresentss a significant policy shift thatcouldn define a new reality for renewable energy in Pakistan. More information is expected to emerge in the next few weeks, with the government anticipated to announce additional plans through the Power Division.
