Government’s Focus on Inflation Control
The second meeting of the Steering Committee on Inflationary Trends in Pakistan was presided by the Federal Minister of Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb. The Finance Minister renewed the commitment of the government in managing inflation and price stability, and specifically to safeguard low-income and vulnerable households that have been affected by economic difficulties, and recent occurrences of natural disasters.
Comprehensive Review of Food Commodities
The committee also conducted an intensive survey of food essentials during the meeting examining the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) and the current trends on major food commodities, including the onions, tomatoes, rice, wheat, sugar, and edible oil. The members evaluated province and region level supply chain disruptions, stock positions, and import status of key items. Authorities have reported that adequate reserves of wheat, in addition to strategic reserves, exist, and that there is also reportedly controllable damage to rice and sugarcane crops.
Measures Against Speculation and Price Hikes
The Finance Minister highlighted the need to closely monitor the market to avoid speculation and hoarding of goods which contributes to artificial price increases. He urged strict vigilance to be followed in order to see that price increments are only as a result of actual supply and demand shifts and not as a result of manipulation. These are aimed at safeguarding the consumers and stabilizing the buying power.
Agricultural Preparedness for Sowing Season
The committee also addressed the coming sowing season where proactive measures were emphasized to have seeds, fertilizers and farm inputs in place on time. The Finance Minister directed the concerned agencies such as NDMA, SUPARCO and Pakistan Bureau of Statistics to coordinate with the provincial governments in ensuring proper and timely assessment of crop damages. These assessments should inform the immediate relief operations and the food security policy in the long run.
High-Level Coordination Across Institutions
The Finance Division, Power Division, Petroleum Division, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of National Food Security and Research, State Bank of Pakistan, Bureau of Statistics and Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), senior representatives were present at the meeting. The fact of this high-level involvement helps to accentuate the cross-sectoral character of the inflation control response, incorporating both fiscal, monetary, and administrative response.
Next Steps and Future Meetings
The Steering Committee was re-convened by the Finance Minister to report back to the Finance Minister on progress made on agreed measures and make additional decisions as required. The government once again gave an assurance to protect vulnerable households, increase resilience to inflationary pressures, and ensure stability in key commodity markets by intervening and providing stringent oversight in time.
