The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, chaired by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, has approved several key supplementary grants and new trade facilitation measures. Financial Support for Roosevelt Hotel and Defence Complex
The ECC heard a proposal by the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control requesting financial support for the Roosevelt Hotel in New York, after their lease contract with New York City was cancelled. Supported by the desire to help the hotel respond to its financial problems, the committee requested the ministry to amend its estimates and resend the proposal to the committee.
Moreover, the ECC granted a technical supplementary grant (TSG) of Rs. 4 billion to the Ministry of Defence. The residents whose land was taken to build the Defence Complex in Islamabad will be compensated through this financing. The remaining requirements will be provided by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), with the amount arranged by the Finance Division.
Grants for Law and Order
To enhance law and order, the ECC granted a Rs. 20 billion technical supplementary grant to the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control. The money will be disbursed in instalments based on need, in line with the Interior Division.
Further, a TSG of Rs. 174.8 million was approved for the Interior Division to assist in the continuing law enforcement efforts of the HQ Frontier Corps KP (North) in Peshawar. These allocations are an effort to strengthen security in sensitive regions.
Reforms in the B2B Barter Trade Mechanism
On the trade front, the ECC had approved the draft Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) proposed by the Ministry of Commerce. The amendment aims at upgrading the Business-to-Business (B2B) Barter Trade Mechanism to facilitate bilateral trade with Afghanistan, Iran, and Russia. The reforms are expected to facilitate cross-border transactions and boost regional economic integration.
