Pakistan has made momentous progress in digitization with the successful landing of Africa’s high-capacity submarine cable at the Sea View Beach landing site of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). It will mean a revolution in the digital consecutiveness of the country and strengthen its place in the global telecommunications network as it is.
Strengthening Telecommunications Infrastructure
In this sense, PTCL’s agreement to enter into the Africa-1 cable system consortium is a watershed for the telecommunications infrastructure of Pakistan. This action further shows PTCL’s commitment to leverage advanced technologies to enhance connectivity across all regions served by the Africa-1 system. Spanning 10,000 kilometers, this cable is the most modern of its kind and connects Pakistan with several important countries including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, France, Kenya, and Djibouti.
Witnessing a Historic Landmark
Having witnessed this milestone first-person, I was at the landing site at which PTCL’s team executed an extremely coordinated effort to bring the cable system to fruition. The cable terminates at the Africa-1 Cable station in PTCL Exchange Misrishah, Phase-VI, DHA Karachi, thus signifying Pakistan’s emergence as one of the most significant nodes in the global digital network.
Reports from PTCL’s Leadership
Syed Muhammad Shoaib, Group VP International Business at PTCL, reflected back on this feat with optimism, saying, “Today, we have gathered here for the groundbreaking activity of the Africa-1 submarine cable’s marine landing. The cable would be PTCL’s fifth submarine cable coming to Pakistan, connecting us with major global digital hubs.”
Mr. Mudassir Mushtaq, Group VP for Service Assurance and Technology Core Operations at PTCL, added in words that would really accentuate the contextual important of this development: “The Africa-1 cable is critical for our roadmap aimed at improving internet speed and latency across the country.”
Technical Aspects of the Project
I also met Mr. Mark Corrigan, Director at Alcatel Submarine Networks. He said, “This project includes a 14.5km pre-laid shore end that will be installed from the barge today,” relating the technical aspect of the project. The thorough approach speaks of the complexity and gravity involved in the project.
A Vision for the Future
PTCL expects to complete the Africa-1 cable system by the end of the 2026 early period, and thus the submarine cable will improve PTCL’s capacity to come to meet the demands of its customers with high quality and reliable internet services according to international standards. Such projects will assist businesses and consumers while further strengthening PTCL as one of the favored telecom operators in Pakistan and beyond.
Conclusion
The arrival of this cable that will surely transform the landscape of communications in Pakistan signifies that the country is standing at the threshold of a digital transformation, with PTCL at the lead. The connectivity path for Pakistan is looking brighter than ever, with global integration now more within reach.
