The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing to launch two major infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving connectivity in Islamabad. Such initiatives are not only valued in terms of billions of rupees but also reflective of the continued dedication of this authority towards urban expansion and easier movement of the people and commuters within the federal capital.
Project 1: GT Road Flyover/Interchange for Direct Expressway Access
The first initiative is the construction of a flyover or interchange along the GT Road, allowing traffic originating in Lahore to reach the Islamabad Expressway directly. This is a major intersection that is often congested, particularly during peak hours. The start-up flyover will simplify the entrance and exit system, reducing delays and gridlocks for thousands of commuters daily.
Project 2: Shaheen Chowk Underpass at Margalla Road and 9th Avenue
The second major development is the construction of an underpass at Shaheen Chowk, a busy intersection located at the junction of Khayaban-e-Iqbal (Margalla Road) and 9th Avenue. The project also entails a continuous 9th Avenue underpass, as well as traffic and the top slab, which will ensure a direct path between 9th Avenue and the service road. This will significantly enhance connectivity north-south and east-west in the city.
Project Timelines and Bidding Details
Both have already submitted technical bids for the projects. For the Shaheen Chowk underpass (estimated at Rs. 1.3 billion), three companies are in competition, while two bidders are in the running for the GT Road project (estimated at Rs. 1.4 billion). A technical appraisal has been made, and then the financial bids will be opened on the basis of transparency and value for money collected.
Completion Periods and Funding Sources
CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza said that the underpass at the Shaheen Chowk was expected to be finished in 150 days, and after 180 days, work on the flyover on GT Road is also expected to be finished. The two initiatives are sustained through revenue achieved in the recent auction of commercial plots by the CDA so that the costs of development are not borne by the city to the extent of straining city coffers.
Impact: Easing Traffic and Supporting Economic Growth
On their completion, they are expected to relieve a great burden on the trafficking and shorten the time of transit and contribute to commercialisation through safer and quicker channels. Urban planners believe that such infrastructure development is necessary to balance the rising population in Islamabad and support economic growth.
Conclusion: A Modern, Connected Islamabad
By introducing the two key road projects, CDA is taking proactive steps toward creating a modernised, interconnected, and efficient Islamabad. Residents can look forward to smoother commutes and a more vibrant urban environment in the months ahead.
