Capital Smart Motors has unveiled the JMEV EV3 electric hatchback at the Pakistan Auto Show in Karachi, targeting entry-level city buyers with a 271 km range and modern features.
New Entry-Level EV Joins Capital Smart Motors Lineup
After rolling out another electric model in the Pakistani market, Capital Smart Motors has launched the JMEV EV3 subcompact hatchback in Pakistan Auto Show (PAPS) in Karachi. The company is the identical importer of the JMEV Elight that is now referred to as one of the least expensive electric sedans in Pakistan.
At the EV3, Capital Smart Motors is also aiming at the customers who desire an entry-level electric car mainly used on a daily basis in the city. The hatchback is presented as a small, utility car that commuters who wish to save fuel and minimize their carbon footprint but not change to a big and expensive EV.
At this stage, CSM has not declared about local prices and an actual booking timetable of the EV3. To understand the level of interest amongst the people, the company has had the car on the auto show and in the process, it has provided its international specification as a preview of what the Pakistani prospective buyers can expect at the time the car goes on sale.
Dimensions and Exterior Design
JMEV EV3 is a short hatchback with dimensions that fit the narrow streets and car park of urban areas. Its length, width and height are 3,720 mm, 1,640 mm and 1,535 mm long, wide and high with a wheelbase of 2,390 mm. These dimensions have positioned it squarely in the small city-car segment, of which easy manoeuvrability is a primary consideration.
Externally, the EV3 has clean and modern hatchback design that boasts of short overhangs and a relatively high roofline to maximise internal headroom. Its alloy wheels are 15 inch in size, which make the car look more upclass than plain steel rims, and to enhance its road presence even though the car is in a small size.
The equipment list includes LED headlights and LED taillights, which enhance the visibility in the night and make the EV3 look more upscale. To the urban motorist who is frequently in the stop-and-go or congested market, the bright, efficient LED lighting is not just a functional benefit, but a fashion statement as well.
Battery, Range and Performance
The JMEV EV3 has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack of 30 kWh under the floor. The durability and stability of LFP chemistry has been associated with longevity, and this aspect can be attractive to customers who are concerned about the safety of batteries and their long-lasting usage.
The EV3 compares to the international WLTP cycle that with a full charge, the driving range is up to 271 kilometres. Although the actual range will be determined by the driving style, the conditions of the road, the use of air conditioning, and temperature, the mentioned range implies that most of the urban drivers will be comfortable during the daily commute without having to charge daily.
The hatchback features an electric motor that generates 67 horsepower and 125 Nm of torque, which is consistent with the fact that it was designed as a city commuter car and not a performance one. This power would be adequate to serve the standard urban performance, short distance inter-city journeys and infrequent driving on ring roads, particularly when the electric motor had the benefit of delivering immediate torque.
It is charged both through alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) and thus allows flexibility to the owners based on the availability of the charger. Overnight top-ups will probably be done with AC charging at home or at the workplace and DC fast charging may come in handy when there are faster sessions at the public charging points when infrastructure is introduced.
Interior, Technology and Safety Features
The JMEV EV3 is meant to provide an urban, technology-oriented interior that will keep up with the demands of the contemporary EV customers in the city. The car has a touchscreen infotainment system measuring 10.1 inches that is located in the centre of the dashboard giving it access to the media, settings and connection features of the vehicle.
The vehicle will also have digital climate control, which will enable its occupants to adjust the cabin temperature to a more precise level than on the older manual air-conditioning systems. It also has mobile app connectivity, which allows the owner to communicate with the vehicle via their smartphone to perform operations like status updates, lock and unlocking, and potentially remote climate or charging capabilities based on market deployment.
The EV3 will offer two airbags standard on the safety front, and vehicle stability assistance (VSA) which are meant to assist in maintaining control in unexpected manoeuvres or when the road is slippery. The Hill assist can be used to avoid rollback on hilly slopes and this is particularly helpful in city congested places where steep ramps and parking buildings have steep slopes.
Isofix child-seat anchor points are also designed in the hatchback and this ensures that installation of child restraints that are compatible with these points is easier and safer among the families. One solution to this is a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) which assists drivers to maintain a watch on the health of tyres, and helps prevent the threat of a blowout, as well as improve efficiency through the behaviour of tyre inflation.
Parking assists would also include rear parking sensors, and the full panoramic parking view that would provide the driver with a better view of the surroundings when he or she is forced to squeeze into a tight space. This combination can be of great help to the city drivers who have to pass the crowded streets and small parking places with high probability of being slightly bumped.
Upper Variant Coming in January, Local Plans Pending
Capital Smart Motors has also ascertained that there is an upper version of the JMEV EV3 that will be introduced in January. Though specifications of the more up-market model are yet to be announced, it will presumably provide extra comfort, styling or technology options to the basic model displayed at PAPS.
The company has so far only announced by putting the car on display in the auto show and providing the international specification sheet. Such local specifics as specific pricing, type of variant, terms of warranty and booking schedules are yet to be determined and probably will be influenced by the importation duties, currency exchange rates, and the reception of the prospective customers.
Provided that Capital Smart Motors can make the EV3 affordable and manage it with quality post-sale services and charging arrangements, the hatchback might serve as a valuable solution to those who are planning to switch to electric vehicles against using petrol in urban areas. With the increasing arrival of EVs such as the JMEV Elight and EV3, the small yet increasing electric car market in Pakistan will only grow, which provides the customers with a more selection in the low-end market.
