As we move into spring, Rawalpindi and Islamabad’s allergy patients are in for tough times. The Meteorological Department has sounded a pollen spread alert, asking allergy and asthma patients to stay on guard till the third week of March, when pollen levels are expected to peak.
Dominant Pollen Types
In Islamabad, the air quality is greatly influenced by Paper Mulberry pollen, which accounts for a whopping 97% of the overall pollen count. The remaining 3% is comprised of other different types such as Acacia, Eucalyptus, Pines, Grasses, Cannabis, Dandelion, and Alternaria. As spring flowers start blooming, pollen levels will slowly rise, usually reaching their peak in late March and declining by mid-April.
Monitoring Air Quality
In order to improve and control the pollen count, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has installed surveillance equipment in various segments of Islamabad, including H-8, E-8, F-10, and G-6. Monitoring is important here because patients having asthma and other respiratory disorders are especially vulnerable during peak pollen seasons. For those concerned with monitoring pollen levels, PMD can be contacted at 051-9250364 or 051-9250745, and even emails can be sent to pollen@pmd.gov.pk. Daily reports about pollen levels would be available on the PMD website and on other media.
Precautions and Advice of Experts
Health experts are of the opinion that rain may bring temporary respite by dropping dust and pollen from the air. Nonetheless, it is important to point out that pollen levels usually increase again once it rains. Thus, those who are susceptible to allergies should be careful during this period. A senior doctor at Holy Family Hospital recommends that patients allergic to pollen use face masks to cover the nose and mouth, especially after rainfall when pollen counts might increase.
Conclusion
With the pollen season now officially underway, it is essential for allergy patients to take preventive measures to reduce allergic reactions. This involves remaining indoors on high-pollen days, utilizing air purifiers, and getting advice from healthcare professionals to access efficient treatment plans. By remaining aware and taking preventive action, people can avoid this challenging season more effectively and safeguard their health.
